Audi Skysphere: First Images of the Autonomous Convertible

Audi announces a concept of large sports convertible but also autonomous called Skysphere. See you on August 10 for the full presentation.

Audi is about to unveil three concept cars in quick succession called Grand Shpere, Skysphere and Urban Sphere. The first one has already been featured in a teaser; Now it’s the runner-up’s turn. This is a great discoverable. Its proportions are officially inspired by certain convertibles from the 1930s with Horch badges, the first marque of the founder of Audi. These are those of a front-engine GT, but its engine should be 100% electric since the manufacturer plans to stop the thermal after 2026.

With its steeply sloping windshield pillars, short overhangs, and boat-like rear end, the car looks stretched out. This impression is reinforced by the particularly thin front light units, on either side of a solid grille whose LED mesh is reminiscent of the grille of a thermal vehicle. The rear lights feature a 3D effect and are linked by light dotted lines. The side windows form an arc of a circle reminiscent of the roof of Audi with a fixed roof. In their continuity, the double boss of the rear part evokes the very sporty style of speedsters. But, surprisingly, the Skysphere shouldn’t have anything so wild.

Sporty and autonomous at the same time?
According to Audi, the Skysphere concept is “transformable” and can go from sporty to user-friendly autonomous car in seconds. But no technical details have yet been revealed, including with regard to the engine. The vehicle must be presented in due form on August 10. The three “Sphere” concepts should be exhibited at the beginning of September at the Munich 2021 show.
