Earnest, günlük basın brifinginde Kübalı bir gazetecinin, “Başkan Obama’yı 2016’dan önce Havana’da görmek mümkün olacak mı?” sorusunu, “Başkan Obama’nın nispeten yakın bir gelecekte Havana’da olacağını ümit eden özellikle bir kişi var ve o kişi de Başkan Obama’nın kendisi” diye yanıtladı.
Sözcü Earnest, Obama’nın Küba’yı, özellikle de başkenti Havana’yı ziyaret etme fırsatını bulmaktan keyif alacağını kaydetti.
ABD, geçen yılın sonunda Küba ile ilişkileri normalleştirme kararı almış, 11 Nisan’da da yarım yüzyıl sonra ilk kez bir ABD Başkanı ile Küba Devlet Başkanı yüz yüze görüşme yapmıştı.
Obama yönetimi, 14 Nisan’da da Küba’yı teröre destek veren ülkeler listesinden çıkarma kararı almıştı.
ABD ve Küba, 1961’de kesilen diplomatik ilişkileri yeniden tesis etmenin koşulları üzerinde yaklaşık beş aydır görüşmeler yapıyor. Görüşmelerin dördüncü turu bugün ABD’nin başkenti Washington’da düzenleniyor.
