Glikozun karaciğerden bloke edilmesi ve böylelikle de insülin duyarlılığını artıran ALOXE3 adlı bir genin aktive edilmesiyle bu faydaların elde edildiği görüldü.
ALOXE3′ün aktivasyonu da kalori yakmayı tetiklerken yağ birikimini ve kilo alımını azaltıryor. Bu şekerle beslenen farelerde kandaki yağ ve kolesterol seviyelerinin de düştüğü belirtildi.
Etkiler oruç sırasında görülenlere benzer. Aslında, farelerde oruç, ALOXE3‘ü karaciğerde de tetikler. Trehaloz, diyeti kısıtlamak zorunda kalmadan oruçun yararlı etkilerini taklit eder gibi görüldüğü açıklandı.
