Electronic Cigarettes and Bacterial Community of the Mouth

Electronic cigarettes are popular with smokers because it gives them the chance to get a nicotine shot without the health risks of tobacco, such as lung damage and an increased risk of cancer.

The truth is that data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that almost 55% of former smokers and 48% of current smokers have resorted to vaping. However, these electronic cigarettes have also become very popular among people who have never smoked, especially among those between the ages of 18-24.

The new research evaluated the effects of these components on the first part of the body they reach: the mouth. In addition to being a route for air to enter the lungs, the mouth is also a gateway for microbes.

Having microbes in the mouth does not have to be necessarily bad, since there are billions of bacteria that live in the body, the skin, the intestines … And they help us fight infections to digest food.

However, in the mouth, changes in the microbiome community can contribute to oral disease, and so the researchers focused on this area. Thus, they compared the oral microbiome of three groups of people: users of electronic cigarettes, smokers of conventional cigarettes, and non-smokers.

In this way, the scientists described the microbial communities present in the saliva of 119 people from the three groups, using a specialized type of genetic sequencing. And the truth is that they found significant changes in the oral microbiome of the vapers.

Compared to cigarette smokers and nonsmokers, vapers had a higher number of bacteria called Porphyromonas and Veillonella, which have an association with gum disease and are a reflection of “compromised periodontal health.”

Experts have linked changes in the oral microbiome to diseases ranging from cavities and bad breath to diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.

Although this study does not show that vaping can cause these diseases, it does show that it is associated with significant changes in the bacterial community of the mouth. Therefore, like smoking conventional cigarettes, vaping also increases the risk of oral infections.
