Eye-witnesses to an apparent gas explosion in Istanbul have described how a pregnant woman was forced to leap to safety from a balcony, as authorities said eight people had been injured.
“She jumped down from the balcony on to a sheet held by the people around and was taken to the hospital afterwards,” a witness said.
While the reason of the explosion remains unknown, Istanbul Gov. Hüseyin Avni Mutlu ruled out the possibility of a terror attack, adding that the possible reason was gas leak. Istanbul Gas Distribution Industry and Trade Incorporated Company (İGDAŞ) said in a written statement that there was no natural gas line in the area, increasing the possibility that a problem with the industrial gas cylinders led to the blast.
Firefighters are checking the building and an investigation is underway.
