Google Employees Work from Home Because of the Coronavirus

Google recommended that all employees in the United States and Canada work from home due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus. A memo was sent to workers and was confirmed by a company spokesman.

“As a precaution, and for the protection of Alphabet [the parent company of Google] and the community, we are recommending that you work from home if your position allows,” wrote Chris Rackow, vice president of global security at Google, according to the American press, which gained access to the document.

This is a preventive action: the company has not confirmed any cases of Covid-19 among its employees. Cases have already been reported among Facebook and Amazon workers in Washington, one of the states most affected by the coronavirus in the U.S., with 22 deaths out of the 29 counted until Tuesday in the country.

Like these companies, Google had already asked its employees in that region to stay at home. The recommendation has now been extended to the company’s 11 offices in the US and Canada.

The company also announced on Tuesday the creation of a fund for temporary employees to have access to paid sick leave if they show symptoms of the disease or are in quarantine. In the USA, paid sick leave is not a legal guarantee and employees can be fired if they do not show up for work because they are sick.
