Güneş dışında herhangi bir yakıt kullanmadan dünya turu yapacak uçak kanatlarına yerleştirilen güneş enerjisi hücreleri sayesinde geceleri de uçabilecek.
Güneş enerjisiyle çalışan bir İsviçre uçağı Pazartesi sabahı Abu Dabi’den havalanarak dünya turuna başladı.
Sadece güneşten alacağı enerjiyle çalışacak uçak herhangi bir yakıt kullanmadan dünyayı turlayan ilk uçak olacak.
Karbon fiber’den yapılan tek koltuklu uçağın 72 metre olan kanat uzunluğunun, Boeing 747 den daha fazla olduğu bildirildi. Uzunluğuna rağmen uçağın ağırlığıysa bir otomobilden daha az. Kanatlarına yerleştirilen 17 bin güneş enerjisi hücresi sayesinde uçağın gece de uçabileceği belirtiliyor.
İsviçreli psikiyatris Bertrand Piccard ve mühendis Andre Borschberg, Si2 adlı uçağı 12 yılda tasarlayıp imal ettiklerini açıkladı.
Solar Impulse adlı şirketin CEO’ su olan Borschberg, Abu Dabi’den kalkan uçağın pilot koltuğunda oturacak iki kişiden biri. Borschberg, helikopter ve uçak pilotluğu eğitimi almış.
Kaşif ve astronot da olan ikinci pilot Piccard ise, dünyanın çevresini balonla hiç durmadan dönmeyi başaran ilk kişi olarak tanınıyor.
Borschberg ve Piccard amaçlarının, alternatif enerji kaynaklarının günümüz teknolojisiyle daha iyi kullanılabileceğini kanıtlayarak havacılık endüstrisinde devrim yapmaya çalışmadıklarını söylüyor.
Pilotlar, bazen iki durak arasında 6 gün boyunca çok dar bir kabinde bulunmak zorunda kalacak. Bu nedenle uçağın koltuğu birçok zaruri ihtiyacı görmek için tasarlanmış. Pilotlar koltuklarından kalkmadan yatabilecek ve tuvalet ihtiyaçlarını da giderebilecekler.
Uçağın dünya turunun ilk etabında Umman, Hindistan, Mandalay, Myanmar ve Çin gibi ülkeler bulunuyor. Pasifik Okyanusunu geçtikten sonra pilotlar, Hawai üzerinden Amerika’ya gelip, Phoenix ve New York kentlerinde mola verecek.
Uçağın, Atlantik Okyasunusunu aştıktan sonra Avrupa ve Kuzey Afrika üzerinden tekrar Abu Dabi’ye varması planlanmış. Bütün yolculuğun Temmuz ya da Ağustos başında son bulması hedefleniyor.
