Italy Makes Almost Five Billion Euros Available to Municipalities

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced today that he will allocate nearly five billion euros for municipalities to help people facing financial difficulties caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

Yesterday it announced that it will immediately release 4.3 billion euros from a solidarity fund for the municipalities, a state mechanism that allows redistributing tax collections by local authorities, to help the areas most economically affected by the pandemic.

The Italian Prime Minister also announced the delivery of over 400 million euros so that the municipalities can distribute vouchers or provide food to people who have been in distressing financial situations, resulting from the work stoppage caused by the pandemic.

“Starting next week, mayors will be able to help issue these checks or provide food or basic necessities to those who need them most. We will not leave anyone alone, abandoned, especially at this time when the whole society suffers,” said the Prime Minister.

Giuseppe Conte said that he asked that, in this chain of solidarity, producers and distributors of food and basic necessities make discounts of 5% or 10% to those who make purchases with these checks.

“With today’s decree, we foresee the disbursement of 4,300 million euros of resources from the solidarity fund to the municipalities, to provide immediate oxygen to their budgets, to which we add 400 million with a protection order that will be distributed to the municipalities, having taking into account the demographic dimension, but also socio-economic factors “, explained the Italian Economy Minister, Roberto Gualtieri, who participated in the conference call conducted by the Prime Minister.

Conte added that the Government is doing everything possible so that the aid measures approved in recent days to help those who have lost their jobs can be paid before April 15.
