2013 yılında askeri darbeyle iktidardan indirilen ve hapse atılan Müslüman Kardeşler yanlısı Muhammed Mursi’nin destekçilerine karşı ülkede geniş çaplı operasyonlar yürütülüyordu.
Cezaya çarptırılanlar Ağustos 2013’te Kardasa kasabasında 16 polisin öldürülmesinde rol oynamaktan suçlu bulundu.
