The Scottish parliament has just passed a bill whereby women of any country, can receive completely free feminine hygiene health products, which makes Scotland the first nation in the world to do so.

The Bill of Products of the Period (Free Disposition) of Scotland went through its first stage with 112 votes in favor, none against and one abstention. Now the second stage is missing, where members of the Scottish parliament can propose amendments.

If there is something that unites us to all women, it is those days of menstrual pain every month. These illustrators have wanted to show with their talent and creativity.

During the debate, the proponent of the bill, Monica Lennon, a member of the Scottish Labor Party, said that passing this bill would be a “turning point to normalize menstruation in Scotland and send that real signal to people in this country about the Parliament’s seriousness in gender equality. ” For Lennon, “these are not luxury items. In fact, they are essential and nobody in Scotland should not be able to buy menstruation products.”

According to the LAD Bible, a recent survey in Scotland revealed that 12% of young women were replacing appropriate medical devices with other solutions and that one in seven girls had to borrow a product from a friend because she could not afford it. The survey also said that one fifth of respondents had switched to a less suitable product due to cost.

“Decisive moment to normalize menstruation and send a signal to people about Parliament’s seriousness in gender equality”

In 2018, Scotland became the first country in the world to provide free health products in schools, colleges and universities. With this new law, for women of all ages, tampons and sanitary napkins in designated public places, such as community centers, youth clubs and pharmacies, would be put free of charge. It is estimated that the annual cost will be 28.7 million euros.

Medical devices in the United Kingdom are currently taxed with a 5 percent tax. The government of former Prime Minister David Cameron indicated his intention to put an end to that “tampon tax”, but that his hands were tied by European Union rules that set tax rates for certain products.
