Tesla Joins the Neuwied Auto Supplier ATW
After purchasing the Grohmann company in Prum in the Eifel region in 2016, the electric car manufacturer took a stake in another Rhineland-Palatinate company. The Californian group got the green light to join the auto supplier ATW based in Neuwied, as a spokesman for the Federal Cartel Office announced to the German press agency.
ATW (Assembly & Test Europe GmbH) belonged to the Canadian manufacturer ATS Automation Tooling Systems, which recently announced the closure of its location in Rhineland-Palatinate. The dazzling tech billionaire Elon Musk, who is building a factory for electric cars in Grünheide near Berlin, is saving jobs at the Neuwied auto supplier, which specializes in battery assembly systems. With its 210 employees, the company supplied, among other things, battery production for BMW, Daimler and VW.
The company advertises that it can also set up complex battery assembly systems within six months. Know-how that Tesla could use especially in the new Gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin. In addition, the company has specialized in the analysis and optimization of production systems.
The Neuwied city spokesman Erhard Jung welcomed it “expressly when another international company” settles in his municipality on the Rhine: “Tesla plays a leading role in electric mobility.”
The mayor of Neuwied, Jan Einig (CDU), had recently argued in a similar way, pointing out that Tesla Grohmann Automation GmbH in Prüm is only around 100 kilometers away – that could facilitate cooperation between the two locations.
