The Earth Fell Into the Perseid Meteor Shower

How to see the brightest of the year?

In August, the powerful Perseid meteor shower passes over the Earth. Its peak will reach in the period from 11 to 13 August, and you can see it from almost any corner of our planet.

What kind of Perseids?

The name Perseida came from the constellation of Perseus, from which, if you look closely, these “falling stars” fly out. The culprit for the appearance of a meteor shower is the large comet Swift-Tuttle. Although the phenomenon is called a “starfall“, in reality no stars will not pass by, we are talking about the smallest dust particles of a comet the size of a pea. They reach the Earth and burn in the layers of the atmosphere, and the inhabitants of the planet receive a beautiful spectacle in the form of a fiery rain. First, it “spills” with the greatest force, then gradually weakens.

The earth passes through meteoric streams quite often,  several times a year, but the upcoming starfall will become special. According to the forecasts of the International Meteor Organization, at least 100 meteors per hour will pass by the planet in the coming days.

Is a starfall dangerous for the Earth?

Despite the impressive spectacle, for our planet this phenomenon can hardly pose a serious danger, the particles of the meteor are too small to reach the surface of the Earth until its complete combustion. In space, the situation is different, sometimes a meteor shower can hit an artificial satellite.

Where is it better to watch the starfall?

The worst option is to look at the stars in large cities, which heavily light the sky. In them you will be deprived of almost all chances to see the beauty of a meteor shower. At best, it will be possible to see one or two meteors per night, so this is not a very good idea, the astronomers explained.

The rule here is simple , the darker, the better. Therefore it is desirable to move away from cities and any settlements, although for 20-30 kilometers, since even an illuminated horizon can spoil everything. In addition, it is a mistake to believe that you will need a telescope to track a star. It not only does not help, but it will also interfere with you, the fall of meteors takes place in a vast space, while the telescope focuses on a small section of the starry sky. What to take with you, it’s just a soft litter and warm clothes, so that a long observation is comfortable.
