Varta Wants to Produce Batteries for Electric Cars

According to a press report, the German battery company Varta wants to manufacture battery cells for electric cars in addition to lithium-ion button cells and household batteries. The large-format battery cell 21700, for which the MDax company is currently building a pilot line at the company headquarters, should initially be installed primarily in high-performance electric cars.

The battery could be used as a short-term accelerator or as part of new drive concepts, it said. Varta is in talks with several automakers. According to the press, Varta did not want to comment on this.

Varta has so far mainly produced small lithium-ion button cells for wireless headphones and household batteries. Consolidated sales climbed by around 140 percent to 870 million euros.
