Washingto Sending Immediate Food And Medical Aid to Lebanon
The United States announced Friday that it will immediately send food and medical aid worth $ 15 million to help Lebanon after the huge explosion that rocked the Beirut port.
The US Agency for International Development stated that the food aid, which will be delivered by the US military, will meet the needs of 50 thousand people for a period of three months, while medical aid is sufficient for 60 thousand people for the same period.
“We stand with the Lebanese people at a time of relief and accountability (those responsible for the explosion) in these difficult times,” the agency said in a statement.
The US agency stated that the aid is in addition to the 41.6 million dollars contributed by the United States to help Lebanon deal with the Covid-19 crisis.
On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron visited Beirut and announced the organization of an aid conference and called on the Lebanese authorities to implement “basic reforms” to get negotiations with the International Monetary Fund out of the dead end.
On Tuesday, a massive explosion took place in a warehouse containing 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate in the Beirut port, killing 154 people and injuring more than five thousand, while dozens are still missing.
The explosion destroyed the entire port and whole parts of the Lebanese capital.
