Leipzig (dpa) – RB Leipzig want to come third time lucky and win their first trophy on Saturday in the German Cup final against Freiburg, captain Peter Gulacsi has said.

Leipzig lost the Cup decider in 2019 against Bayern Munich and last year against Borussia Dortmund, and recently went out in the Europa League semi-final against Scotland’s Rangers.

They have also been Bundesliga runners-up, and Champions League semi-finalists in 2020, and Gulacsi told Wednesday’s edition of the Sport Bild weekly it is now time to deliver.

“Glasgow was very bitter. We had the chance to reach a European final, that doesn’t happen every day. Now it is about finally proving to others and ourselves that we can win titles,” the goalkeeper Gulacsi said.

Founded only in 2009 and backed by Austrian drinks makers Red Bull, Leipzig are not overly popular in the country but Gulacsi is not concerned that many Germans will be backing Freiburg who are also yet to win a trophy and are in their first final.

“The issue is not new, we can ignore it,” he said. “We as footballers simply want respect, and I think we deserve a lot of recognition through our success over the past years.

“We have it in our own hands to make it,” he added.
