Covid-19 Ema Authorizes Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved the use of the Covid-19 vaccine developed jointly by the US company Pfizer a  nd its German partner BioNTech, putting Europe on track to start vaccinations In a week.

European Union countries, including Germany, Austria and Italy, have said they want to start vaccinations starting December 27, while Europe is trying to catch up with the United States and Great Britain, where the launch of vaccination programs started earlier this month.

After the ok from the European Medicines Agency (Ema), the last step is the approval by the European Commission, which according to President Ursula von der Leyen will take place later this evening. The Commission usually follows the advice of the EMA.

Preparation for vaccination starts comes at a time when the identification of a new highly virulent strain of the coronavirus in Great Britain has wreaked havoc across the continent, with countries blocking links to the UK. and stopping trading before the Christmas holidays.

Medical students, retired doctors, pharmacists and soldiers are being recruited for a European vaccination campaign on an unprecedented scale.

The phased approach to inoculation operations requires frontline health workers and nursing home residents to take priority, with most national vaccination programs not reaching the general public before the end of the first quarter of 2021, as soon as possible.

The goal of the 27-country bloc is to achieve coverage of 70% of the total population of 450 million.

The regulatory drug agency in Switzerland has authorized the use of the vaccine in individuals over the age of 16.
