Samsung is Rumored to Spend More than 10 Million Dollars to Setup A New Plant in the United States

Samsung Electronics has been trying to catch up with TSMC in terms of foundry market share. As TSMC is expected to mass produce 3nm process chips in the second half of next year, a source revealed that Samsung Electronics is considering Spend more than 10 billion U.S. dollars to build a new factory in Austin, Texas, USA this year to produce 3nm process chips.

“Bloomberg” reported today (22) that a source revealed that Samsung Electronics intends to build a new factory for the production of 3nm process chips in Austin, Texas, USA. It is expected that the factory will start construction this year and install main production equipment and equipment from 2022. It will start to operate in 2023, but this plan is still in its preliminary stages. Samsung Electronics may still change the content of the plan, and the investment is expected to exceed US$10 billion.

Sources said that Samsung’s planned new US plant will be the company’s first plant in the US to use the extreme ultraviolet lithography process (Extreme ultraviolet lithography). A source said that Samsung has hired people in Washington, D.C., to lobby for its new plant plan. However, it is expected that Samsung may continue to advance its new plant plan even if it does not receive tax incentives and subsidies.

In response to this report, Samsung said it has not yet made any decision to invest in the new plant. TSMC’s 3-nanometer plant at the Nanke Fab 18 in Taiwan started construction last year. The plant is expected to be installed this year and trial production at the end of the year with mass production in the second half of 2022.
