Soaring memory costs prompt Dell to raise prices for commercial PCs

Business Insider obtained an internal Dell price adjustment list detailing price increases for commercial products sold to enterprise customers, rather than consumer products. According to Dell’s last quarterly financial report, commercial business accounted for approximately 85% of annual revenue in the Customer Solutions Group (CSG), which sells hardware such as computers and monitors.
Business Insider reports that Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max laptops and desktops equipped with 32GB of memory will see price increases of $130 to $230. Optional 128GB memory will increase the price by $520 to $765 per unit. Choosing a laptop with 1TB of storage will increase the overall cost by $55 to $135.
An unnamed Dell sales employee stated that the price increases range from 10% to 30%, depending on the details of the customer’s contract.
Dell sent a letter to employees instructing teams to engage with key clients, close deals, and plan for future opportunities and cross-quarter contracts within the next week to maintain sales channels. “Ordering now will not lock in current prices at future delivery,” the letter emphasized, adding that “acting early still helps customers prepare for the upcoming memory price hike.”
Dell is a major supplier of computer equipment to enterprises. The price increases are not unique to Dell; the entire PC industry is affected by memory and storage chip shortages and price hikes, leading to widespread cost increases. Competitors like Lenovo and HP are also impacted, forcing Dell to pass on these costs to its customers.
The surge in demand for AI infrastructure is forcing technology companies to scramble for memory and storage chips, further intensifying competition with consumer and commercial products.
“Like other companies in the industry, Dell will take targeted pricing action when necessary, while maintaining supply continuity and its commitment to customer value,” a Dell spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement. “Our supply chain is resilient and globally distributed, providing the necessary flexibility to respond to macroeconomic, regulatory, and trade dynamics.”
