The smartphone market is picking up. According to reports, , global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of this year are expected to increase by nearly 50% year-on-year, reaching 340 million units. Apple’s iPhone is expected to become a big winner. Digitimes Research estimates that Apple’s iPhone shipments in the first quarter of this year are expected to exceed 60 million units, compared with 90 million iPhone shipments in the previous quarter. Apple may become the biggest winner in the six months ended March, with total shipments exceeding 150 million units, an increase of 38% over the same period last year.
According to the industry, Samsung Electronics will rank second, and its shipments will drop slightly within six months. The fourth quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 will be approximately 60 million to 65 million units, respectively. Xiaomi will be ranked third, with a total shipment of 90 million units within six months, an increase of more than 80% over the same period last year.
Affected by US sanctions, the bank predicts that in the first quarter of this year, Huawei will ship less than 20 million smartphones, ranking sixth.
In terms of 5G mobile phones, Digitimes Research estimates that by 2021, global 5G mobile phone shipments will exceed 600 million units, more than double the 280 million units in 2020. Huawei, Apple and Samsung were the top three 5G mobile phone suppliers last year, accounting for more than 70% of global 5G mobile phone shipments.
