VW Amarok R: The Sports Twin of the Ford Ranger Raptor

It will be the most extreme version of the second generation of the Amarok. It will be built in South Africa with a V6.

VW Commercial Vehicles, VW’s commercial vehicle division, confirmed that the second generation Amarok produced in South Africa will be equipped with a V6 TDi engine. Called “R”, the most powerful and extreme Amarok will be located at the top of the range and will be developed together with the Walkinshaw engineering company, which has already collaborated with Volkswagen on other developments of its pick-up.

“There is an opportunity for all kinds of products in the pick-up segment. An Amarok R is definitely an option. It is what we are developing and investigating at the moment,” said Ryan Davies, director of VW Commercial Vehicles, in statements. to the Australian magazine Cars Guide.

The “R” designation would put the new sports Amarok on a par with other high-performance Volkswagens, such as the famous Golf R. The development of the Amarok R will follow in the footsteps of the new generation of the Ranger Raptor, which will have the the recently unveiled Bronco Raptor: V6 3.0 bi-turbonaftero, with 400 hp (read more).

The Amarok II will be produced at the same plant in South Africa (the only confirmed location so far) where the new Ford Ranger is also produced, to supply the European market. The veteran Amarok I will maintain “until further notice” production in Pacheco (Argentina, read more).

Let us remember that the second generation of the Amarok was developed in partnership with Ford and will be based on the new generation of the Ranger, which has already been presented worldwide (read more). The two models will share platforms, engines and numerous components and will only differ in exterior design and equipment level.

The new Ranger and Amarok are one of the first products to be part of Project Cyclone: the global alliance between Ford and VW to develop commercial vehicles, electric cars and share semi-autonomous technologies. The Amarok will only live on courtesy of VW’s alliance with Ford, as the former admitted it would otherwise have been discontinued.

While the new Ranger is already known, VW has only confirmed so far that the Amarok II will be 100 millimeters longer and more than 40 mm wider than its predecessor and will adopt the same mechanics that Ford has already confirmed for the new Ranger: 2.0 turbodiesel, 2.0 bi-turbodiesel, in addition to the V6 TDI. On the other hand, official images of the interior show a completely digital board and a new multimedia screen and more careful finishing details.
