Windows 7 Officially Ends Support Today
Today, Windows 7 officially ends support. When Microsoft released Windows 7 and Office 2010 a decade ago, it focused on delivering the best productivity experience of its time. Since then, artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies have been advancing by leaps and bounds, and Microsoft has continued to strive to create tools that can help users gain an advantage in a new productivity model. With the rapid changes in the Zi’an environment every day, 10-year-old technology is difficult to completely resist. With the power of Windows 10, organizations and individuals can enjoy the most efficient and secure experience ever. Microsoft also reminds users to switch to Windows 10 immediately when Windows 7 ends support.
More than 900 million devices are currently using Windows 10. As part of the Microsoft 365 solution, Windows 10 uses the power and insights of the cloud to provide Microsoft’s most secure and efficient experience to date. Windows 10 version 1909 is now available, and users can enjoy new and enhanced features, including Windows Hello smart security, a streamlined update process, flexible management, and higher productivity. Highlights of version 1909 include a new Windows search experience in File Explorer, a cloud-based scrapbook with browsing history, support for digital assistants developed by third-party vendors, Microsoft BitLocker key rotation, and more in kiosk mode. Although every business needs to be vigilant against today’s complex security threats, SMBs remain the most vulnerable link. As detailed in Brad Anderson’s previous blog post, Microsoft has developed a comprehensive solution to make SMEs safe and secure. The key is to take the important first step of “converting to Windows 10.”
For large enterprise and SME customers who have not transitioned to Windows 10 immediately, Microsoft also proposes a solution that can remain secure during the transition period, and provides Windows 7 Extended Security Update (ESU) through cloud solution partners and mass licensing. Under the ESU program, Microsoft will provide security updates for critical issues identified by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC). However, this choice is not a permanent solution. In order to take advantage of the best security protection capabilities of Windows Defender antivirus software and Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), enterprises are strongly recommended to switch to Windows 10 as soon as possible.
If virtualization is one of the options considered by businesses, Windows Virtual Desktop provides extended security updates for Windows 7 virtual desktops, and no additional cost is required if your license qualifies to ensure that legacy applications are still supported when transitioning to Windows 10. If there are application compatibility issues, the Computer App Guarantee service will provide resources to help you fix compatibility issues with Windows 10, Office 365, Microsoft Edge, and Windows Virtual Desktop. In fact, more than 99% of apps on Windows 7 are compatible with Windows 10 and Office 365 ProPlus.
Although Windows 7 is no longer supported, until January 2023, Microsoft will continue to provide security updates for Office 365 ProPlus running on Windows 7 devices. However, those Office 365 ProPlus users who still use Windows 7 will not receive new feature updates. For support dates for different versions of Office on Windows 7, see the Office system requirements table.

Office 365 ProPlus is powerful in the cloud, and it’s the backbone of Office’s future. As Microsoft shared in an article in October this year, users who have not yet adopted will likely miss essential productivity features that are critical in the market competition. Microsoft encourages users to start using Office 365 Professional Plus today and enjoy the great experience that Microsoft has made with the times and continuously invest resources in innovation.
In short, Office 365 ProPlus has three highlights: First, AI and machine learning have greatly enhanced creativity and innovation in everything from PowerPoint design to Excel analysis. Second, cloud capabilities enable real-time collaboration across applications and make Microsoft Teams the center of teamwork. Finally, built-in cloud security protects data security, allowing businesses and users to have both productivity and information security.
Once support for Office 2010 ends on October 13, this year, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Office 2010. Office 365 ProPlus is recommended to ensure a highly secure Office experience for users. Microsoft has prepared several resources to help users smoothly transition to Office 365 ProPlus, such as:
The Office Readiness Toolkit helps identify compatibility issues with Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros and the add-in sets used with Office. The Readiness Toolkit includes the Readiness Report Creation Tool, which creates Excel reports with VBA macro compatibility and add-on readiness information to help organizations evaluate the readiness of moving to Office 365 ProPlus.
The Office Cloud Policy service helps administrators control policy settings for all Office 365 ProPlus users and their devices, even if the device is not joined to a domain or other management. The Office Cloud Policy Service is a cloud-based portal that allows administrators to define policies for Office 365 ProPlus and assign those policies to users through security groups in Azure Active Directory. Once defined, these Office policy settings will be applied roaming to any device that Office 365 ProPlus users sign in to.
The Microsoft 365 Deployment Center will provide the latest deployment and service guides for upgrading to Windows 10 and Office 365 ProPlus.
In times of rapid change, switching to new tools can be daunting. However, Microsoft hopes to use innovative tools to help every business and every user embrace these changes and keep pace with the times. Including Windows 10 and Office 365 ProPlus included in Microsoft 365, users can enjoy an efficient and secure experience when using the device. At the same time, IT professionals will find these tools easier to deploy and manage. The end of support for Windows 7 and Office 2010 is a great opportunity to transition to tools designed for modern work. Take action now, and every step of the road will be backed by Microsoft.
