Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft are Asking Staff to Work from Home Because of Coronavirus
Facebook has said, “We strongly recommend that all employees and contract employees who work in the Bay Area work from home on the 6th.” A spokeswoman for the company described the measures as being guided by Santa Clara County.
Employees responsible for the company’s site safety and security will continue to work on site, but will discontinue all Bay Area events.
A Google spokeswoman has also said it is offering Bay Area employees the option of working from home.
Meanwhile, Microsoft revealed earlier today that two employees were infected with the new virus. One Microsoft employee and one LinkedIn employee were infected.
In the United States, Google, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft recommend that their employees do their jobs from home if possible. Employees who are not absolutely required on site in the company should remain in the home office.
The recommendation refers, among other things, to the offices in Seattle, the state of Washington is most severely affected by the corona virus in the United States. Google extends recommendation for headquarters and San Francisco offices.
A Google spokesman said, that the decision was made after consulting the health authorities. Google does not limit the period for the recommendation for the time being. Already on Tuesday, the company instructed its 8,000 employees in Dublin to work from home after suspected coronavirus infection, reports 9to5google.
Amazon recommends its Seattle headquarters employees to work from home by the end of the month. On Tuesday, an employee of the online retailer tested positive for the virus. Facebook will close its Seattle office until March 9th, after the virus was detected by a business partner.
Microsoft has also asked its employees to stay in the home office whenever possible. However, the software manufacturer still needs some “important” employees on site at their workplace, where the company follows government guidelines on disinfection.
