BMW Recalls i4 and iX – Risk of Fire in the Battery

A fault in the manufacturing of batteries used in the BMW i4 and BMW iX has led the German manufacturer to initiate a recall. The reason is stated to be that the batteries can suffer from so-called thermal rush and catch fire.

It was during a quality check that BMW discovered that Samsung SDI batteries used in cars built between November 22, 2021 and July 30, 2022 may have been manufactured incorrectly. No case of fire has been reported. But to be on the safe side, the battery packs should be replaced.

So far, it only concerns a small number of vehicles in the USA and Germany. In the US, 56 copies of the electric SUV iX and 27 copies of the BMW i4 are being recalled. In Germany, a total of 30 copies of both models have been recalled, ten of which are still in BMW’s possession and have not been delivered to customers.

According to the American authorities, it concerns the versions iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50.

Elbilen has contacted BMW but has not yet received confirmation if cars in Sweden can also be affected by the recall.
