Covid-19 Numbers Fall in Portugal

The situation of the pandemic continues to evolve favorably in Portugal. There are a further 1,186 new cases of covid-19, the lowest number since October, and 65 deaths. Hospital admissions rose, but in intensive care they decreased.

The DGS report reports 1,186 new people infected in the last 24 hours, down from 1,570 the previous day and 1,303 last Sunday. It is necessary to go back to 11 October, when 1,090 cases were counted, to find such a low record.

Deaths also decreased, from 76 on Saturday to 65 today. It is the lowest count since December 28. The lethality rate is now 2%, reflecting the drop in the number of cases that is faster than that of new deaths.

In hospitalizations, the evolution is not homogeneous. If there are now fewer 18 patients in intensive care, there are 32 more patients in the wards, bringing the total to 3,316 and interrupting the downward trend that occurred in the previous five days. In the intensive, there are 638, the lowest number since January 16, after nine consecutive days of decrease.

The report also reports on a further 2,306 recovered patients, which are now close to 700,000. There are also 1,185 fewer active cases, which now total 82,341. Since January 5, the number of Portuguese people considered to be infected has not been so low.

In the last week, there were an average of 1,681 new infections, which has not happened since October 15th. The number of cases accumulated in the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the main indicators for measuring the evolution of the pandemic, has dropped to 312, the smallest since October 25. From 240 cases, the risk is considered high, so Portugal is closer to being able to lower that threshold.

The downward trend also continued in the North, with 358 cases or 30% of the total, the lowest value since 7 October. It also went down in the Center (202 cases), in the Algarve (22) and in Madeira (71). In Alentejo, it rose from 31 newly infected to 42 and in the Azores from 3 to 7.
