DESFA: Gas Consumption Reduced by 21.74% in the First Half of 2023

A 15.03% increase is recorded in natural gas exports compared to the same period of the previous year.

Gas consumption reduced by 21.74% compared to last year, the consumption of natural gas in Greece is recorded, according to the data of DESFA for the first half of 2023. The Terminal of Revythoussa (entry point of Agia Triada) is the main entry gate of natural gas of the country in that period, followed by the entry point of Sidirokastro, whose flows almost doubled compared to the same period last year.

According to DESFA data, during the first half of 2023, the domestic consumption of natural gas decreased by 21.74%, reaching 23.72 Terawatt hours (TWh), from 30.31 TWh in the corresponding period last year. Exports amounted to approximately 9.9 TWh, recording an increase of 15.03% compared to last year.

The quantities of natural gas imported into the country from the LNG Terminal in Revythoussa (entry point Agia Triada) amounted to 55.5% of the total imports, recording an increase of 7.87% compared to the first half of 2022. In particular , approximately 17.3 TWh of LNG was unloaded from 26 tankers coming from 6 different countries. 41.38% of said LNG quantities came from the USA, reaching 7.16 TWh. In second place were imports from Russia (3.17 TWh), followed by Egypt (3.02 TWh), Algeria (2.48 TWh), Norway (0.97 TWh) and Spain (0. 51 TWh).

Regarding the contribution of the remaining entry points, a significant decrease of 45.85% was recorded in the imports from the Sidirokastro entry point, which covered 21.44% of the total imports (7.22 TWh). The Nea Mesimvria entry point, through which gas transported by the TAP pipeline is delivered, covered 20.14% of imports (6.78 TWh), while Evros Gardens (Greek-Turkey border) covered 2.92% of imports (0.98 TWh).

Regarding natural gas consumer categories, power producers continue to record the highest consumption, meeting 63.4% of domestic demand with 15.04 TWh out of a total of 23.72 TWh consumed. An increase of 14.31%, compared to the first half of 2022, was recorded in the consumption of PV by industries and CNG vehicle refueling stations, directly connected to the ESMFA, which amounted to 1.91 TWh, an amount corresponding to almost 8.06 % of domestic demand. The consumption from the distribution networks during the first half of 2023 moved to the level of 6.77 TWh, covering 28.54% of the total demand.

DESFA‘s infrastructures continue to contribute substantially to the diversification of natural gas supply sources and security of supply. Finally, the liberalization of the energy market and the Third Party Access TPA regime, on the basis of which DESFA operates, strengthens price competition. Third Party Access (TPA) is governed by European Union and national law provisions, ensuring open access to any interested party.
