DFINITY – Redoing the internet so that people can once again own their data

Dfinity is building something it calls the internet computer, a decentralized technology that is spread across a network of separate data centers that allows software to run anywhere on the internet instead of using the server farms that are each increasingly controlled by large companies, such as Amazon Web Services and the Google Cloud.

There was a time when it was thought (really) that Dfinity could represent another way of thinking about the internet and promoting innovation. It was when it raised $ 102 million in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Polychain Capital two years ago, reaching a capitalization of $ 2 billion. It has since remained one of the countless digital tombs in search of someone who can really make them live. Projects so revolutionary and visionary and yet innocent (in the good sense of the term) that the internet is questioned as it has developed so far. But let’s start from the beginning ..

What is Dfinity
It is a non-profit organization headquartered in Zurich with offices in Silicon Valley in Palo Alto and San Francisco. Founded four years ago by Dominic Williams, its mission is to enable a new transmission protocol capable of supplanting the World Wide Web. Naturally, the big digital (and non-digital) platforms such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook are in the sights. militarily occupied the Internet, making it a place where today it is difficult to innovate unless you enrich those who are already there and therefore risk being swallowed up or worse, cloned. Experts call it “platform risk” that is the risk that comes from building your own technology on someone else’s platform. An example? Who today would dream of making money with an alternative search engine to Google?

How it should work.
Dfinityy was born as a secure digital space, virgin to potentates and intimately decentralized, the kryptonite of what the internet is today. Or wanting the nostalgic dream of the 1990s web when it was still an uncontaminated place, with low entry barriers and without the presence of innovators like the large multinationals that dominate it today. In fact, no one denies the technological revolution created by, for example, Amazon. We discuss the possibility of doing different and perhaps equally innovative things outside those platforms. The idea is therefore to replace the internet protocol (IP) with a new standard called the “internet computer protocol” which would allow software to operate freely, without interoperability problems as within a public cloud. Instead of having centralized servers, DNS and competing cloud computing services, applications could be written directly to the internet as if it were a single large open platform. The project is ideologically beautiful but it risks having terrifying security problems that today it is the multinationals that manage. However, a solution can be envisaged.

LinkedUp is born, the LinkedIn without bosses
At the beginning of the year, Dfintiy presented a social network called LinkedUp, which, as the name suggests, is intended to be an open version of LinkedIn. Unlike Microsoft’s social network for professionals, LinkedUp, which runs on any browser, is not owned by anyone. The computing power to run the application – LinkedUp, in this case – does not come from Amazon AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure, but is instead based on the distributed architecture that Dfinity is building.

And now there is CanCan, the new open TikTok
In early summer, they launched “CanCan,” a TikTok-like app that will run in a browser and is not owned by a company. As you can see in the video it is a Demo. The idea is that anyone can build their own TikTok. Apps like CanCan, they told Techcrunch magazine, can be built with fewer than 1,000 lines of code. Facebook, for example, contains more than 62 million. To achieve this, Dfinity builds on the work of Andreas Rossberg, co-creator of WebAssembly, who has now created Motoko, a new programming language optimized for Internet Computers. Dfinity. For now, Dfinity is little more than word of mouth, a suggestion so revolutionary as to attract the interest of venture capital. The ball, however, today is the independent developers who are called to work on the platform, writing lines of code and new applications. The company is titanic. And today he lives, indeed vivacchia, under the eyes of the real titans of the network.
