Fiocruz will Start Making 100% National Vaccine After Approval by Anvisa

An input produced nationally for vaccine against covid-19 was approved by The Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa). Fiocruz says it will deliver the first doses to the Ministry of Health in February.

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation was authorized to distribute doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine against covid-19 with a totally national input.

The new stage comes after the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approves the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (the so-called API) made internally in Brazil, a decision released this Friday, 7.

Until then, in the vaccines delivered in the Brazilian immunization plan, Fiocruz used imported input to manufacture the Oxford University vaccine with AstraZeneca. With the imported input, the doses were then bottled at the Institute of Technology in Immunobiologicals (Bio-Manguinhos).

“In practice, the decision concludes Fiocruz’s process for Brazil to have a 100% national vaccine, with all stages of production carried out in Brazil,” said Anvisa in a statement.
