First LGBT + Hotel in Havana will Pen Soon
Havana’s first LGBT + state hotel will open “soon”, Cuban military tourism group Gaviota, which will operate in association with Spanish chain Axel Hotels, said on Monday.
The Telegrafo Axel Havana Hotel, now in the final stages of renovation and improvement, will soon reopen its doors, ”Gaviota announced on its website.
The hotel already existed before, but without a specific clientele niche. It is located in the historic heart of the capital, very close to the Capitol.
After work, it will offer 63 rooms and various services to tourists passing through Cuba.
Axel Hotels “wants to position itself as the world’s leading benchmark group targeting the LGBTIQ + public, with a range of quality products and services,” says the company, headquartered in Barcelona.
Mid-May is usually the time when the LGBT community in Cuba marches to defend their rights, a demonstration suspended for the third year in a row, in 2019 officially due to “tensions in the international context”, in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic .
The initial draft constitutional revision even opened the door to gay marriage, but this was pushed back in the final version approved in 2019, in the face of opposition from the Church who had campaigned against the text.
However, a commission is now tasked with drafting a new Family Code, which should include same-sex marriage before it goes to a referendum.
If approved, it will be a real upheaval on an island where, in the 1960s and 1970s, sexual minorities were stigmatized and homosexuals harassed and even sent to “re-education” camps.
