German Development Minister Warns of Famine Risk Due to Ukraine War

Berlin (dpa) – Germany’s Development Minister Svenja Schulze accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “using hunger as a weapon” on Wednesday as she announced plans to launch a global food security alliance.

Speaking at a meeting of G7 development ministers in Berlin, Schulze said there was a higher risk of famine due to the war in Ukraine.

“The terrible consequences of Russia’s war go far beyond Ukraine,” Schulze said.

The development ministers from the leading industrialized democracies are holding a two-day meeting to discuss challenges from famine to climate change to rebuilding Ukraine, which is also a major global exporter of grain.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal will attend the meeting via videolink.

“There is a threat of famine because Putin is deliberately using hunger as a weapon,” Schulze said. “We must counter this with a new alliance for global food security, which we intend to adopt at this meeting.”

Schulze had proposed the alliance in April along with World Bank President David Malpass to provide additional funding and close coordination of food security efforts.
