Huawei Kirin 980 is the World’s First 7-Nanometer Smartphone Processor
Huawei officially introduced the Kirin 980 a new smartphone processor that will bring the development of mobile AI to an even higher level.
The Kirin 980 is the first chipset produced by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer’s (TMMC) 7-nanometer processor and combines the best in class performance, efficiency, connectivity features and computing power of the new Dual NPU AI.
The high-tech 7nm TSMC process allows the Kirin 980 to bring 6.9 billion transistors into just 1cm2, which is 1.6 times more than the previous generation. Compared to the previous 10nm process, the new 7nm process provides 20% higher performance and 40% higher chip energy efficiency.
The Kirin 980 is also the first SoC (system on chip) system based on Cortex-A76 processor cores that are 75% more powerful and 58% more efficient than previous generations. Huawei uses an innovative Kirin CPU subsystem with Flex-Scheduling technology that creates a three-tier structure of energy efficiency consisting of two high-performance cores based on Cortex-A76, two highly efficient cores based on Cortex-A76 and four extremely efficient Cortex-A55 cores.
This solution directs the most intense workload to larger and more productive cores to ensure consistent performance, while ultra-efficient cores take care of everyday, lighter activities, relying on extreme energy efficiency. The higher operating speed of the Kirin 980 compared to its predecessor allows faster loading of applications, more convenient multitasking and a more smooth user experience.
Graphics in video games, including mobile, have evolved enormously in recent years. To respond to this trend, Huawei integrates into the Kirin 980 a special Mali-G76 GPU GPU that will meet the needs of the most ardent gamers. It delivers 46% better graphics performance and 178% higher energy efficiency compared to the previous generation GPU. The Mali-G76 is also working with innovative technology that allows artificial intelligence to calculate how much the game loads the system and distributes the workload evenly so the game can continue to run smoothly.
The latest Kirin system marks the beginning of a new era in the development of the AI operating in the device. The Dual NPU Architecture of Kirin 980, representing a dual neural network architecture, offers artificial intelligence with higher processing power and intelligence. The synergy between the two neural networks provides a Dual NPU image recognition system that is significantly more powerful than the simple sum of both. The Kirin 980 can recognize 4500 images per minute, which is 120% more than the Kirin 970 – yet another clear evidence of Huawei’s leadership in Artificial Intelligence. In addition, the Kirin 980 also works with familiar framing systems such as Caffee, Tensorflow and Tensorflow Lite, providing a set of tools for easier on-device AI development, allowing developers to better utilize Dual NPU computing power.
In search of the best mobile photography technology, Huawei installs its fourth-generation ISP technology in the new Kirin 980. In addition to its 46% faster data transfer than its predecessor, Huawei also delivers smoother multi-camera configuration, as well as a new HDR color reproduction technology that can adjust contrast in different parts of a single image. In addition, the Kirin 980 also has a multi-pass technology that allows the removal of certain objects (artifacts) from one image without compromising image quality – a technology that is very useful when capturing and processing photos in low light. Another new feature of ISP is enhanced tracking. When the photographer attempts to capture a moving subject, the ISP recognizes the subject with 97.4 percent accuracy, making it possible for everyone to capture even the most unpredictable and unexpected moments.
The rise of videocentric social networks has led to increased demand and development of video processing technologies. Kirin 980 is a step forward in this direction, allowing the camera to shoot at 33% less delay.
To improve the experience of users using the Kirin 980, Huawei added the first LTE Cat.21 support system, which has a maximum download speed of 1.4 Gbps. In addition, the Kirin 980 supports carrier aggregation technologies even in different frequency ranges, so users can enjoy this high speed wherever they are in the network of who they are.
