McLaren 765LT Spider a Thrilling Discovery

The 765LT Spider is the most powerful open-top McLaren ever produced. “Since 1997, the F1 GTR LongTail has paved the way for the development of high-performance cars with outstanding lightness and aerodynamics,” the McLaren designers tell us. “Today LT has become a brand dedicated to our road models designed for the track, and the latest addition is the 765LT Spider”.

Like its sister in the coupé version, the 765LT Spider is also a car for the few: “We have decided to market only 765 examples, a number that will allow us to preserve its exclusivity”. If the basis is that of the 720S Spider, the slimming cure has made the 765LT Spider lose 80 kilograms of weight which brings further benefits in terms of performance and driving dynamics of the vehicle.

Pushing this monster out into the open is the 4.0 V8 twin-turbo boosted to 765 horsepower and capable of 800 newton meters of torque all managed by rear-wheel drive alone. The ratio between weight and power is close to 600 horsepower per ton (the weight of the car is just 1,388 kilograms), mind-boggling numbers that allow it to jump from 0 to 100 in just 2.8 seconds, from 0 to 200 in 7, 2 seconds and reach a top speed of 330 kilometers per hour. The roof opening mechanism is also lightning fast: 11 seconds are enough for the carbon cover panel to disappear.

The 765LT Spider does not hide its racing vocation. The design clearly expresses the desire to make the most of the air to go in search of speed and, above all, stability. The exteriors are covered with carbon aerodynamic appendages such as front splitters, side skirts and the large active rear wing, which serves to brake the car when necessary and, at the same time, to crush it to the ground.

Compared to the 720S from which it derives (here our test), the 765LT Spider enjoys 25% more downforce, while the equipment dedicated to the model – from forged alloy wheels with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires to shock absorbers with specific calibration , passing through the widened carriageways – guarantee maximum performance and driving pleasure. “The new wheel group with forged rims has allowed us to save 22 kilograms of weight compared to the 720S Spider”, explain the technicians.

Immersed between carbon and Alcantara
The weight savings that guided the entire project meant that neither the air conditioning nor the audio system are standard, but customers can choose to have them without paying any surcharge. The passenger compartment is covered with Alcantara, the seats are made of a single shell in carbon fiber, as are the central tunnel and the floor of the car in carbon.

Different color combinations are foreseen for the interiors, but if not one satisfies the demanding requests of the customers, the MSO program can be accessed to customize the spider in every specific detail. “We continue to build the LT brand and the introduction of the 765LT Spider demonstrates how high the level of this brand is. The coupé version is already sold out, while by 2021 we have already reached full production capacity ”, comments Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren. Orders for the McLaren 765LT Spider are open at the starting price for Italy of 378,500 euros.
