The Audi Q5 Becomes Slim Sportback

Not only is Audi updating the Q5, they are also redesigning it to offer a second body shape. Q5 does like little brother Q3, gets leaner in Sportback version.

Today’s Audi Q5 not only begins to age, it also lacks anything that the competing models BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC have, namely a slim model version à la X4 and GLC Coupé. This misunderstanding is now Ingolstadt’s pride in correcting. Now that Q5 is about to be adjusted (likely to be presented this fall), it is also advisable to change the slope of the rear roof pillars. In other words, Audi’s midsize SUV will be offered in two versions – the Q5 and the Q5 Sportback. The model becomes the brand’s third slim suave after the Q3 Sportback and e-tron Sportback. If you count in Q8, which is only available in slim design and thus not called Sportback, you instead count to four.

The car is masked. Audi’s logos are covered. But on labels around the car it says Audi AG. Not so secret.

From Q5 Sportback, we can expect the same visual and technical news that we will encounter at regular Q5 when it is updated. Some details, in addition to the mentioned pillars, will be unique for the Sportback model. Compared to today’s Q5, we see a different shape on the headlights and possibly a slightly wider grill. The bumper section is also different. At the back we see taillights that are perceived as slightly more straight than on today’s Q5. Whether these details are unique to the Sportback model or if they belong to the Q5’s general updates remains to be seen.
