Netflix earned a total of 34 nominations in both film and television, its two wins can arguably be seen as a shutout. None of Netflix’s biggest titles, including The Irishman or Two Popes, won any awards. On the acting side, Marriage Story’s Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, and The Irishman’s Al Pacino and Joe Pesci all lost out to competitors in their respective categories. Even though they lost tonight, there’s always a good chance things will be different at the Oscars next month.

The most important awards in the drama category were surprising: 1917 is the best film. Sam Mendes accepted the statuette after receiving the award for best director. And in the comedy or musical category, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, best film, best screenplay, and with Brad Pitt wins among the supporting actors.

The very favorite Irishman takes nothing. The two popes are also cut off. The other favorite, Joker, earned Joaquin Phoenix the prize for best actor and that for the soundtrack (Hildur Gudnadottir). At Marriage Story only the best supporting actress Laura Dern. Among the protagonists expected victory for The Farewell).

Like Rocketman: two golden globes for the best actor (Egerton) and the best song (I’m Gonna Love Me Again) sung with Elton John.

Patricia Arquette, awarded as best supporting actress for the series The Act launched an attack on President Donald Trump. “In the history books we will not think about tonight – he said – but we will see a country one step away from the war, the United States, and a president who tweets to bomb 52 places including cultural sites. Life-threatening children, who cross the world, people who don’t know if the bombs will fall on their children’s heads. And Australia on fire. So, while I love my kids a lot, I ask all of us to give them a better world. ”

Lifetime Achievement Award for Tom Hanks, presented by Charlize Tehron who confessed on stage that he had a ‘Splash’ video cassette and how he had long dreamed that Hanks would come to save her. The actor was moved to thank his wife and mother for his five children. In the presentation video a ‘gem’ for fans appeared: the participation of a very young and unrecognizable Hanks in the TV series ‘Love Boat’. Many, even in the dining room, had never known.
