The tourist submarine that took people to the wreckage of the Titanic and that disappeared this Monday (19) had tickets for US$ 250,000.

The value was transferred by Stockton Rush, president of OceanGate Expeditions, responsible for the trip, to The New York Times.

Rush said public interest in the wreck justifies the demand for exploration of the site. “No public entity will finance the Titanic,” said the CEO. “There are other sites that are more recent and likely of greater scientific value.”

OceanGate is used to running these kinds of tours, taking paying tourists in submarines to visit underwater canyons and shipwrecks;

It’s about eight hours of travel, with 2.5 hours to go down and up;

Scientists and historians contextualize the trip and others carry out research in the region;

They also film the wreckage with high-definition cameras, in order to document its deterioration in detail;

Rush explained that these images allow researchers to look even closer at the region without having to go down there.

For the company owner, the trips they promote are like space tourism, and he indicated that commercial trips were the first step in expanding the use of submersibles for industrial activities, such as inspection and maintenance of underwater oil platforms.

For those of you who think it’s expensive, it’s a fraction of the cost of going into space and it’s very expensive for us to take these ships and go there. And people who don’t like anyone making money forget that this is the only way to do anything in this world if there is profit or military necessity.
