Trump: “Productive” Telephone Conversation with Saudi Crown Princes
US President Trump has spoken with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman – Saudi Arabia is playing the “crucial role” for stability in the Middle East. However, the Kashoggi case was apparently not an issue.
US President Donald Trump telephoned on Tuesday with the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. The White House said on Tuesday evening (local time) in Washington, the two had a “productive conversation” out. They talked about the crucial role of Saudi Arabia in stability in the Middle East, as well as the continued pressure on Iran and the importance of human rights issues. The case of the dead Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi was not mentioned by the White House.
In connection with the killing, the US government imposed entry bans on 16 former Saudi government officials on Monday. Trump has been under criticism for a long time because of the case and his attitude towards Saudi Arabia. Khashoggi was killed on October 2, 2018 in the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul. Only under immense international pressure did Saudi Arabia close the kill and initiate investigations.
There are indications that Saudi Arabia’s highest circles around heir to the throne “MbS” might have caused or at least knew about Khashoggi’s murder. Trump and his government nonetheless stuck to the Saudi leadership and the crown prince in the debate – which met with much criticism both in the US and internationally. Even in the ranks of Trump’s Republicans, there was some displeasure.
Most recently, the US Congress – including the Republican-dominated Senate – had received a clear political signal against Trump’s support for Saudi Arabia: both chambers of Congress voted in favor of a majority resolution calling for US support for Saudi Arabians Arabia-led military operation to be ended in Yemen. Trump, on the other hand, can veto – it would be the second of his terms.
