US Air Force Wants to Develop New Polar Sound Cruise Missiles

Few days ago, it was reported that the Air Force wanted to develop another type of supersonic cruise missile, and it has consulted defense manufacturers for relevant technical information.

According to the “Defense News” report, the US Air Force issued a notice on April 27, requesting defense manufacturers to provide information on aspirated conventional polar sound cruise missiles. Air Force Procurement Executive Rob (Will Roper) said that these responses will assist the Air Force in deciding whether to inject a new plan and understand how quickly such weapons can be deployed.

Rob said that in terms of supersonic combustion ramjet engine (Scramjet) technology used in cruise missiles, I think we can go fast, but I do n’t know how fast it can be. That ’s why we have to seek manufacturers ’assistance. However, considering the maturity of Scramjet technology, I hope that this aspect can develop rapidly.

According to the tender plan, the US Air Force‘s goal is to reach the preliminary design review stage in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, and the technology should have a Ramjet, Scramjet, or dual-mode propulsion.

The polar sonic cruise missile (HCM) is very different from the current mainstream polar sonic glide vehicle (HGV). The former is launched in the atmosphere and operates in the manner of a traditional cruise missile, which can reach 5 to 6 times the speed of sound ( Mach); about the latter; the latter uses a booster to reach the outside of the atmosphere, uses gravity and the engine to accelerate, and changes its trajectory with a glide design.

Rob said that we will not make concessions to opponents on the basis of Scramjet technology and supersonic cruise missiles, and pointed out that having supersonic cruise missiles will make the US military more flexible. In addition, this plan can also make the suppliers of polar sonic weapons more diverse and avoid the monopoly of a single manufacturer.
