Bayern Boss Nagelsmann Positive on Contract Talks with Lewandowski

Munich (dpa) – Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has reported initial contract talks between club bosses and star striker Robert Lewandowski have been positive but there is not yet signs of a new deal being agreed.

“I have already asked if it was a good conversation Nagelsmann told reporters on Friday. “It definitely was.

“But there is also nothing to announce in any direction.

“My position has not changed that we definitely want to keep him and definitely want to extend his contract.”

The 33-year-old Lewandowski’s contract expires in 2023 but Bayern have ruled out selling the summer forward this summer. He has been repeatedly linked with a move to Barcelona.

Captain Manuel Neuer’s and winger Serge Gnabry’s deals expire at the same time but attacker Thomas Müller renewed his contract to 2024 last week.

“It was very important that he extended, this will also send a positive signal to people both within the club and outside of the club,” said Nagelsmann. “It could mean others will follow suit now. I’m really happy about it.”

Corentin Tolisso’s stay in Munich, however, could be coming to an end as injuries have continually hampered the French World Cup winner and his contract is up for renewal at the end of the season.

“I really value Coco unbelievably,” said Nagelsmann but admitted his fitness issues were already a “little problem.” It will be seen what the future brings,” he added.

Bayern have already confirmed a 10th successive Bundesliga title and will be presented with the trophy after their final home game of the season against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.

“We will give our all to try and win our final home game in front of a sold out Arena this season,” said Nagelsmann, who expects “difficult squad decisions” after Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala all returned to training after illness.

Defender Niklas Süle is unlikely to start ahead of his summer move to Borussia Dortmund but “might also get some minutes” in his Munich farewell, Nagelsmann said.
