Alibaba’s Self-Developed 5nm Chip Shows up

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba officially released the server chipYitian 710” developed by its wholly-owned semiconductor company “Pingtou Ge” at the Yunqi Conference on the 19th. It is the first server chip using Arm architecture to apply a 5nm chip process. .

Zhang Jianfeng, President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence and Dean of Dharma Academy, stated that Etian 710 will not be sold, but will become the heart of Alibaba’s self-developed server “Panjiu”. Ali said that the server has stronger performance in general computing, artificial intelligence computing and high-performance storage.

This makes Alibaba a new Chinese technology company with self-developed server CPUs, and also the third cloud computing manufacturer in the world with self-developed Arm server chips after Amazon AWS and Huawei.

Of course, Ali only designs the chips by itself, and the manufacturing still has to find OEMs. Self-designing chips is the general trend, ranging from Apple, Google to Amazon, and Chinese company Huawei. Baidu also raised funds this year, and it is said to develop an independent semiconductor business.

Alibaba regards cloud computing as the key to future growth, but as of now, Alibaba’s 2021 fiscal year performance shows that revenue from cloud computing business has grown 50% year-on-year to 60.12 billion yuan, accounting for only about 8% of overall revenue.

However, market research firm Canalys estimates that Alibaba is already China’s largest cloud computing player, but its opponents are catching up with heavy money.

US sanctions continue to nibble on Huawei’s mobile phone business, and Huawei also hopes to increase revenue from cloud services.

According to Gartner data, the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) market will reach $64.3 billion in 2020, an annual increase of 40.7%. Among them, Amazon ranks first with 41% of the market. Followed by Microsoft (19.7%), Alibaba (9.5%), Google (6.1%) and Huawei (4.2%).
