Apple And TSMC are Rumored to Develop Micro OLED Screens
It is rumored that Apple has cooperated with TSMC to jointly develop miniature OLED screens for AR devices. It is currently in the trial production stage, with the goal to start mass production in a few years.
Nikkei Asia News reported that Apple and TSMC are collaborating on the development of micro-OLED screens. The screen is not produced on a glass substrate, but is directly built on a semiconductor wafer, making the screen thinner and smaller, suitable for wearable AR devices, such as AR glasses.
The report quoted a source as saying that the size of the micro OLED screen is less than 1 inch, and it is currently in the trial production stage, and it is estimated that it will take several years before mass production. The source also pointed out that some parts of the trial production screen will use TSMC‘s existing chip production equipment and technology.
The report also stated that the project was one of two projects carried out by Apple’s laboratory in Longtan District, Taiwan. In addition to micro OLED screens, the company is also committed to the research and development of micro LED technology, and has set up trial production lines for these two projects.
