Arm Aims to Self-Develop Chips ‘More Advanced Than Ever’

Chip development isn’t straightforward, and often results in a lengthy process of designing by a tech giant and manufacturing by a third-party company. With the recent push of the European Chips Act, however, the situation in the West could change. An initial signal comes from Arm which, as reported by Reuters, could autonomously design and build chips for various products, including cell phones and laptops, starting with the next generation.

Arm becomes autonomous for chips

In particular, it is stated that Arm engineers are working on the prototype of a chip “more advanced than ever” designed internally and also to be built independently, possibly using the Fabs of a third party with special concessions. The main candidate remains Intel: Pat Gelsinger’s company already collaborates with Arm for the production of mobile chips and, already in the past, has been available to collaborate with NVIDIA and AMD in the production of their chips at its plants.

On top of that, Intel has been predominantly an x86 chip maker in the past; ergo, it has the infrastructure necessary for the production of chips with Arm architecture.

According to reports, Arm will ask the new engineering team to lead the development of these next-generation solutions and the creation of other proprietary chips to be brought to the shelves after 2025, leveraging an architecture designed from scratch.

At the moment, however, the details known to the press – and to the public, of course – are very few. The company could announce more information about its plans to produce chips later this year along with a list of devices it will look towards.
