Linus Torvalds Announces the Availability of Linux 6.3

The new stable version of the kernel was announced by Linus Torvalds and is already available: these are the main novelties of Linux 6.3.

A couple of months after the arrival of the previous 6.2 and less than a week after the last released candidate release, here is the general availability of Linux 6.3. The announcement came, as always, directly from Linus Torvalds himself, with a reference to the most important innovations introduced by the latest stable version of the kernel and to the fact that the preparation phase went smoothly, without particular problems have arisen.

It’s been a smooth release this time, and the last week has been no different. So, here we are, fully on time, with the 6.3 release out and ready for you to enjoy.

Linux 6.3: Meteor Lake support and more

The advances are recorded mainly in terms of hardware and software support, with a new DRM driver for Intel VPUs (Versatile Processing Units) that introduces compatibility with 14th generation Meteor Lake CPUs, AMD’s Automatic IBRS functionality and the AES-SHA2 encryption for NFS file system.

Among other innovations, there are significant advances in terms of guaranteed performance in the area of networking, thanks to the implementation of PLCA (Physical Layer Collision Avoidance) Reconciliation Sublayer and BIG TCP for IPv4. Still, there’s an improvement on the Thunderbolt front. The complete list of changes can be found in the Finnish IT intervention.

Still on the subject, there are updated drivers for devices and hardware such as BananaPi R3 and Banana Pi BPI-M2 Pro, 2015 Samsung Galaxy tab A and Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 tablets, Lenovo Yoga Book notebook, Rockchip RV1126, Orange Pi R1 Plus , Radxa Compute Module 3 IO, the Logitech G923 Xbox Edition steering wheel and the 8BitDo Pro 2 controller for gaming, the EVision keyboards and devices based on the Qualcomm chip for Wi-Fi 7. Finally, initial support for Steam Deck should be noted, the portable gaming platform from Valve.
