At the University of Harvard, Chancellor Merkel is being honored at the award of an honorary doctorate. In her speech, she does not even mention US President Trump – and still settles for him.

“Guest of honor in @Harvard. Chancellor Merkel is in Boston today to receive an honorary doctorate. More than 15,000 graduates, students, parents and teachers are celebrating with her at the 368th graduation ceremony.”

Chancellor Angela Merkel in a speech in front of 20,000 listeners at the graduation ceremony at the US elite Harvard University for truthfulness advertised: “This includes that we do not call lies truths and truths do not lie.” Even if the Chancellor meant this sentence of her speech as a general warning, thousands of listeners in the elite university library park see the words as criticism of US President Donald Trump. They answer with applause.

The speeches of the students pose the question of equal opportunities. For example, Genesis De Los Santos tells how she grew up alone with her mother in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Boston, not far from Harvard: “As in Harvard social housing in South Street, there are many dreamers, future leaders and artists only difference is in available opportunities. ” The university is not a reflection of the United States, though it seeks scholarships to reach students from all parts of society and from around the world.

“Climate change threatens the natural foundations of life,” says the chancellor of applause interrupted. ” The resulting crises are human-induced, so we can and must do everything possible to really get the challenge under control.”

The University Newspaper writes that Merkel also receives an honorary doctorate for her refugee policy – precisely those policies for which she had to cope with fierce criticism in Germany.

Several times in her speech Merkel makes clear in her speech that her time as Chancellor will soon come to an end: “I believe that we must always be prepared to finish things, to feel the magic of the beginning and to really seize opportunities.”

She challenges students to tear down existing walls. Then you could do anything. There it was again, the “we can do it” from before. And for that she had been invited to Harvard.
