Bayern Lose as do Dortmund Despite Haaland Hat-trick Freiburg Fourth

Berlin (dpa) – Bayern Munich crashed 3-1 at mid-table Mainz a week after clinching a 10th straight Bundesliga title and second-placed Borussia Dortmund also lost on Saturday, 4-3 at home against Bochum despite an Erling Haaland hat-trick.

Freiburg won 4-3 at Hoffenheim to move into the fourth and final Champions League spot, pending RB Leipzig’s trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Monday, when third-placed Bayern Leverkusen also face Eintracht Frankfurt.

Roland Sallai netted on 23 minutes with Freiburg roared on by noisy fans but Andrej Kramaric levelled. Angelo Stiller and Freiburg skipper Christian Günter then quickly traded stylish strikes in the second half before Lucas Höler and Jeong Woo Yeong sealed the win.

Hoffenheim’s Sebastian Rudy struck on 84 minutes for a nervy finish.

Mainz beat a makeshift Bayern thanks to Jonathan Burkardt’s low drive, Moussa Niakhate’s tap-in and Leandro Barreiro. Robert Lewandowski was on target for his 34th league goal of the season and record 18th away goal in a Bundesliga campaign.

“I think you always need a certain basic passion in the game. We didn’t have that today. That’s a bit human when you’ve just become champions. But nevertheless, we still wear the Bayern logo on our chest,” coach Julian Nagelsmann told reporters.

Haaland reversed an 2-0 deficit following Sebastian Polter’s header and Gerrit Holtmann’s classy shot with two first-half penalties and a bundled effort. But Bochum had the last laugh through Jürgen Locadia and Milos Pantovic’s spot kick late on.

Bochum’s first win in Dortmund in 24 years made sure of safety.

The day’s drama was at the bottom where VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld got last-gasp 1-1 equalizers against Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin in their fight against the drop.

Substitute Chris Führich volleyed into the roof of the net in the 89th for third-last Stuttgart to cancel out John Anthony Brooks’ early header for Wolfsburg, who are now safe.

In Bielefeld, Hertha’s Lucas Tousart scored but Joakim Nilsson headed the hosts level in stoppage time which means Hertha are not yet safe. They are four points above Stuttgart in the relegation play-off spot with two games left, with second-bottom Bielefeld another two back.

“We weren’t brilliant but we weren’t expecting this. Unfortunately we came under pressure in the end. The situation remains critical between Stuttgart and us,” Hertha coach Felix Magath told Sky.

He said later: “When I took this job I was sure we would end up in a relegation play-off with Hamburg. I’m not working for that to happen, but it would not surprise me if it still happened.”

Magath added he hopes Bayern make more of an effort next weekend against Stuttgart after they “stopped playing” in Mainz. A Bayern win would assure Hertha of survival regardless of their game with Mainz.

European contenders Cologne won 4-1 in Augsburg thanks to teenager Jan Thielmann, Mark Uth and a second-half-brace from Anthony Modeste, with the hosts all but safe despite the defeat.

Cologne rose into sixth past Union Berlin, who drew 1-1 with relegated Greuther Fürth on Friday with two matchdays left.
