Coronavirus: Housing Construction in Slight Decline Compared to Pre-Crisis

HOUSING Between June and August, 82,800 housing units began to be built in France and 120,800 permits were issued for future housing.

Between June and August, housing construction increased slightly by 0.4% compared to the previous three months, but the indicator remains slightly lower than its pre-health crisis figure, according to figures released by the government, this Wednesday.

Between June and August, 82,800 homes began to be built in France and 120,800 permits were issued for future homes, according to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, on which Housing depends.

Construction sites stopped during confinement
During the last three months, authorized dwellings are stable (+ 0.4%) compared to the previous three months, when construction increased by 3.4%. Over the same period, housing starts fell 4.4% after increasing sharply (+ 11.6%). During the last 12 months, from September 2020 to August 2021, construction has increased by 7.4% compared to the previous 12 months and the authorizations for construction have reached + 13.5%.

It should be noted that these increases are calculated in relation to the period from September 2019 to August 2020 which includes the first confinement, where authorizations had fallen sharply and where many projects were unable to start because of the  covid-19 crisis.

Almost 130 million euros in aid
The numbers of dwellings authorized and started in the last twelve months are still slightly lower (respectively by -0.9% and -0.4%) than their levels of the twelve months preceding the first confinement (March 2019 to February 2020).

To support the construction of housing in tight areas (where the number of available housing is lower than demand), the government will pay 130 million euros to municipalities in November, provided for in the framework of the recovery plan under the “Urban densification and renewal” and “help to relaunch sustainable construction”. Its amount will be calculated on the basis of the building permits issued between September 2020 and August 2021.
