COVID-19 Vaccine Now Available to People 70 and Over in Montreal
Towards the end of February, the regions of Montreal and Laval received a “number of vaccines greater than the weight of their population”, because of “their epidemiological situation”, indicates the Ministry of Health and Social Services. ” This is why these regions were able to start their vaccination faster and to a larger number of people, for example those aged 70 and over,” the MSSS said in an email.
Other regions could follow suit and vaccinate people in their 70s earlier than planned, depending on vaccine availability, it is added. This is already the case for the Cote-Nord.
In Montreal, some 3,000 people aged 85 and over were due to be vaccinated at the Olympic Stadium on Monday. Long queues formed there from the start of the day.
Elsewhere in the line, where the two-meter distance was not always respected, others were tapping their feet more. “We don’t know the information,” impatiently Francine Forest, who came with her mother, Rita. By his side, however, his mother hinted at a smile under his mask. And her daughter said she was happy anyway: “We sure can’t wait to get the vaccine. We’ve been waiting for it for so long. ”
In addition to some hitches related to the computer system, it is especially the advanced age and deafness of some patients at the time of registration for a second dose that led to the queues, explains Caroline St-Denis, director of the vaccination campaign of the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Ile-de-Montreal.
Other Montreal seniors were less fortunate. Between 200 and 300 people had their appointments postponed this weekend, due to a computer problem, according to the CIUSSS du Nord-de-ÎIe-de-Montreal.
16.7% of the 13,000 Madelinots have been vaccinated, according to the Regional Directorate of Public Health. This includes all residents of CHSLDs, health workers, people who live in private seniors’ residences and those aged 80 and over. Further doses are expected by the end of March to continue vaccination with people 70 to 79 years old.
