Google Postpones Cookie Cutting Until 2024

Google CEO Sundar Pichai speaks on a panel at the US CEO Summit hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce on June 09, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. The Executive Director Summit entered the second day of events with the official signing of the “Coalition to Connect International Marine Protected Areas” and a speech by US President Joe Biden.

In its latest update on plans to replace third-party cookies for ads, Google says it will last until 2024.

“The most consistent feedback we received was the need to take more time to review and test new privacy sandbox technologies before ending the use of third-party cookies in Chrome,” wrote Anthony Chavez, Google’s vice president of privacy sandboxing. blog post on Wednesday “As developers use these APIs, we aim to phase out third-party cookies in Chrome in the second half of 2024.”

Cookies are small pieces of code that websites send to a visitor’s browser and persist as long as the person visits other sites. This practice has contributed to much of the digital advertising ecosystem and its ability to track users across multiple sites to target ads.

Google said last year it would stop supporting these cookies in its Chrome browser in early 2022 as it considers how to meet the needs of users, publishers and advertisers and develop tools to help find solutions. But in June 2021, Google pushed the timeline, giving the digital advertising industry more time to adjust plans for targeted and privacy-conscious ads.

The new timeline shows that the company won’t make any changes for another two years.

Another delay comes as advertising and e-commerce companies are hit with privacy changes in Apple’s operating system privacy updates that reduce targeting options by limiting advertisers’ access to the iPhone’s user ID. Earlier this year, Facebook said that the changes will end it will spend 10 billion dollars this year.

It also comes as US and UK lawmakers scrutinize the company’s dominance of the ad tech ecosystem.

In a blog post Wednesday, Chavez wrote that the company is also expanding testing windows for the Privacy Sandbox API. “Sandbox” is an initiative launched in 2019 to find alternatives to cookies while reducing the impact on publishers and other players. Last year, after advertisers expressed their concerns about the changes, Google said it was “overconfident” about third-party alternatives.

Developers can test these APIs now, but starting in early August, tests will expand to millions of users around the world and become generally available on Chrome in the third quarter of 2023 — about a year from now, the company said.
