Harry and Meghan’s Documentary for Netflix: There is Already a Trailer

The exact date is not known, but the British media assume that it will be next Thursday, December 8. That day Netflix will broadcast the first of the chapters of Harry & Meghan, a docuseries centered, presumably, on the love story of the Dukes of Sussex and that promises strong emotions. Or, at least, a new controversy in the royal family.
Yesterday morning , the streaming giant released the first trailer for the docuseries and we were finally able to see the first images of Harry and Meghan. “Why do you want to make this documentary?” a voice-over, supposedly from the director, Liz Garbus, asked at the beginning of the trailer. From there, a whirlwind of unpublished photographs of the couple followed one another where we saw them relaxed, happy and in love. But little by little, harsher images appeared, of intrusive cameras, rotating newspapers and an unflattering photo of the Sussexes together with Kate and Guillermo at the religious ceremony in Westminster Abbey on the occasion of Commonwealth Day 2019.
The background of a fairy tale that never was
“No one sees what is happening behind the scenes,” Harry commented on camera, hinting (once again) the true ordeal that he and his wife had to go through for months and that it caused, according to Meghan revealed in the interview with Oprah Winfrey, that she ended up with severe depression, even suicidal thoughts. In the trailer, you could see images of the couple supposedly crying because of the pressure they were under, but they were also seen together and at one with each other, showing that, despite the obstacles, their love has always been stronger.
That is, basically, what they wanted to broadcast in the docuseries: a love story that faces formidable challenges. In fact, Meghan herself already hinted that the shots were going there when, in October of this year, she gave an interview to Variety magazine, and made it clear that she and Harry had wanted to explain her story.
Possible attacks on the royal family
Beautiful, but everyone believes that there will be much more and, above all, that there will be veiled criticism – or explicit, we’ll see – of the royal family and, in particular, King Charles III and Kate and William, the new princes of Wales . After all, the last time Meghan and Harry spoke openly about their situation – in the famous interview with Oprah Winphrey – they dropped explosive comments about the royal family and even accused them of being racist. Let’s remember that the controversy reached such a point that, the day after the interview was broadcast on television, Prince William had to answer more than uncomfortable questions from the press about whether his family was really racist. “No, we are not a racist family at all,” he answered bluntly and with a very angry face.

A few months later, it was revealed that Meghan was going to be the creator and executive producer of a cartoon series titled Pearl. The protagonist was a twelve-year-old girl who is inspired by the actions of some of the most influential women in history. However, in May 2022 the project was canceled (Netflix had lost 200,000 subscribers in a short time and had put an end to some creations that it had already initially approved).
A very left-wing director
In September 2021, several British media reported that Harry and Meghan were filmed by a recording team while they were participating in an event on the Global Citizen platform in New York. They were also seen together with a large recording team – six vans, some assured – in The Hague, the place where the Invictus Games took place, a kind of Paralympic Games that Harry promoted years ago for veteran soldiers. All this gave rise to speculation that the Sussexes were recording a series about his life. The rumors at the beginning even pointed to a possible reality show.
Little by little the details were worked out. It was learned, for example, that Meghan and Harry had originally hired a prestigious director, Garrett Bradley, creator of an acclaimed Netflix series about tennis player Naomi Osaka. However, they must not have fully understood each other or had very different ideas, and Bradley abandoned the project.
The Sussexes then decided to have Liz Garbus, whom they had already hired for the failed Pearl. Garbus is a very activist director and committed to the left, and her works include very feminist documentaries, such as What happened, Miss Simone? (about Nina Simone) and Love, Marilyn. Ella garbus also directed the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, for which she was nominated for an Emmy in 2021.
We will have to wait to see her work on Harry and Meghan until December 8.
