Netflix’s crackdown on passwords is starting to pay off.

According to a report by analyst firm Antenna, the platform gained around 100,000 daily subscriptions in the United States in the days following the limit on sharing accounts among various users.

According to the new policy, anyone who wants to have their account used by people outside their household must pay an additional price, equal to 4.99 euros in Italy, in order to obtain a “slot” in which to enter the email address of who will take advantage of the Netflix subscription for streaming content.

Until recently, it was possible to have the same subscription used by those who were considered as members of the family group, because they connected from their devices, at least once a month, to the internet connection of the first holder of the contract. Between May 26 and 27, the day the new policy was announced, Netflix subscribers in the United States increased by 102% compared to the daily average in previous months. According to Antenna, such growth has not been seen since the times of the Covid lockdowns.

This does not mean that, in the same period, there have been no cancellations but that these have not affected the volume of new subscribers. Netflix estimates that over 100 million households share their accounts with others, including 30 million in the United States and Canada. The stop to shared subscriptions has not only increased subscriptions but has also led to a jump in the stock on the stock exchange. Since the new rule was applied, Netflix has gained almost 16%, after a period of crisis, the result of an all-time low in May 2022.
