Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to Visit Berlin

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to make an official visit to Berlin next week and meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to Israeli media reports.
Netanyahu is expected to stay from Wednesday to Friday, although there was no official confirmation of the trip from the German side.
The German government has recently criticized Netanyahu’s right-wing religious government for its proposed law to reform the judiciary.
Under the proposal it will be possible for parliament to overturn decisions of the Supreme Court by a simple majority. Politicians are also to be given more influence in the appointment of judges.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Friday that he was concerned about the “restructuring of the rule of law” and was counting on the “wise and balancing voice” of his Israeli counterpart and friend Isaac Herzog.
Herzog spoke out publicly against the weakening of the judicial system for the first time on Thursday evening.
“It is wrong, it is repressive and it undermines our democratic foundations,” the Israeli president said, adding that he had managed to reach an agreement with supporters and opponents of the reform over most of the disputed areas.
Herzog did not disclose what exactly the compromise to replace the previous plans might look like. However, he has warned that the government and opposition would drag Israel into the abyss if they put their political interests above the welfare of the country and its citizens.
There is fierce resistance to the judicial reform in Israel, where tens of thousands of people have repeatedly taken to the streets to protest against the plans.
