Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has shown in an open interview to rethink the deficit that will be entered in the budget for next year, after the formal refusal of Brussels.

In an interview with the AdnKronos publication, which questioned whether the 2.4% deficit Italy proposed to Brussels is “stuck in the stone,” Matteo Salvini replied: “I do not think anyone is focused on this, the number could be 2.2% or 2.6%. ”

For the deputy prime minister, the question now is to be “serious and concrete.” Before Salvini, one of his economic advisers, Armando Siri, made statements to the newspaper Il Messaggero that “some adjustments” to the Budget can be considered in order to avoid turbulence in the capital markets. However, he pointed out that only some of the measures are subject to change because voters are counting on the promises made during the election campaign to be fulfilled.

In the same interview with AdnKronos, Salvini even stressed that he intends to carry out one of his campaign proposals as early as next February. By then, the Italian leader hopes to lower the retirement age.

The position of the Italian leader follows the rejection of the budget proposal that was formalized by Brussels last Wednesday, 21 November. With the decision taken by the college of Commissioners, the first step was taken with a view to the formal opening of an excessive deficit procedure against Italy.
